Saturday, April 26th, was Opening Day for Plainville Little League. The ceremony began at noon in Trumbull Park. Players, managers and coaches from every team in all divisions were called out onto Robert K. LaBranche (RKL) Field.
Sgt. Devon Julian and Cpl. Joey Cruz of Charlie Company (United States Marine Corps, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division) raised the American Flag. With Old Glory waving proudly, Mark Levandowski played a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner on his trumpet. Deacon Robert Berube from Our Lady of Mercy Church offered a blessing of the day's events, as well as for the upcoming season. Rachel Lancaster then read the Little League Pledge.
The managers and coaches of every team were then introduced - with the exception of the AA Bears, who were mistakenly omitted. Our apologies to Shawn Griffin (manager) and Tim McCrorey (coach).
Scott Stroh (League President), Nicole Pugliese (Player Agent), Karen Cox (Auxiliary President), and Diane Milo (for Rock Cats Day) all addressed the crowd.
Six First Pitches were thrown by six of Plainville's finest. Police Officers John Quilter (manager of the AAA Robins), Greg Barrett (coach of the Major Tigers) and Gary Miller each threw out a 1st Pitch, along with Firefighters Kurt Plourde (coach of the Major Robins), Matt Ferguson, and Jim Lenois.
Winning raffle tickets were drawn at 12:45pm. Also, Representatives from Plainville Food Pantry were on-hand for a non-perishable food item collection.
Some teams had their pictures taken that morning. If your team did not, click here for a schedule of when your team photos will be taken. For a Picture Order Form for Curtis Sports Imaging, click here.
Finally, we had a wonderful day for baseball games to be played. The kids on the Majors, AAA, AA, Softball, and Juniors teams all played great to wrap up Opening Day for the 2008 season.
Thank you to all of the volunteers (especially the Concession Stand workers!), and to everyone who helped organize the day's festivities.
